Nothing is a bigger part of moving than the cardboard box. Small boxes for knick-knacks, large boxes for electronics or disassembled furniture, and all the varieties in-between, the box is a vital tool for anyone moving.

But once the move is over, what do you do with that pile of boxes? Here are some ideas, from the simple to interesting craft projects:

Always Remember to Recycle

This doesn’t just mean breaking down the boxes and taking them to your local recycling center, although of course you should always do that rather than throwing them away. However, there are plenty of places that need boxes. U-Haul and other moving companies often have a place to put old boxes so that other people can grab them and use them in their own moves. Several charities have uses for boxes either for storage needs or to haul around donated items. And of course, you can always check your area see who’s about to move right now and see if they need your old boxes.

Use in Gardens

This is a bit more involved, but old boxes can be a excellent part of your garden. Strip the box into single layers (corrugated cardboard can be too thick for this), and lay it down over weed-infested areas. This will kill off most weeds and their seeds. Then put more soil or compost over the box layers and start planting. Over time, the cardboard will decompose and provide more compost for your garden.

Build Fortresses

Stack together several boxes and glue or tape them into place. Cut out holes large enough for whomever will need them, and if necessary, use pieces of other boxes to reinforce corners or add stability. You can paint, wallpaper, or cover these boxes in felt or other things to make them more attractive, or just let the kids decorate them as they want.

If your project is to be used by your kids, don’t make the boxes stand too high, but you can still make play castles, pirate ships, or spaceships without too much effort. Just don’t let them climb on top. If the fortress is for your pets, especially cats, give them plenty of areas to hide, climb up high, or crawl through tubes.

Make Storage Items

Just a plain box doesn’t usually fit most home decors, but you can always cut out parts, cover them rough edges in tape, and paint or cover them to fit in. These can be used to hold papers, plants, or whatever else you want. These work especially well in pantries, storage closets, or in home offices.

Or, of course, you can use the boxes for their intended purpose by keeping things organized and safe while you’re storing them.

As always, remember that Gerber Moving and Storage can help you with all your moving needs.
