Energy_Star_logoUpon moving to your new home in Kansas or Missouri, consider making energy improvements which will reduce your utility bills. There are some great tips in the EnergySavers guide from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Energy Efficient Appliances

Energy efficient appliances have the yellow ENERGY STAR® label which tells you the appliance meets guidelines for efficiency set by the U.S. Department of Energy. An ENERGY STAR® appliance can lower energy use by 20-40+% compared to appliances that don’t comply. Water heaters, furnaces and air conditioning units are included in this category.

Save Energy With Certain Home Improvements

Make sure you have adequate insulation throughout to reduce drafts and loss of energy. Keep cool/warm air from escaping your home by replacing older windows with newer double-pane glass windows. See this list of government agencies that provide tax credits and rebates for improvements: http://www.energy.gov/savings.

Low Cost Improvements If You’re Low On Cash

If buying big-ticket items is not an option at this time, there are smaller items you can buy that can still save you money. Turn down the heat and air-conditioning throughout the day by installing a programmable thermostat. Replace incandescent bulbs with LED or CFL bulbs to reduce energy usage. It also helps to install expansion foam or caulk which will seal holes around vents, wires and pipes leading into the house.

All of these energy improvements will help you save money in the coming years.
